As we begin this term, we recognize that there will still be changes ahead, particularly with budget adjustments and staffing levels. Please know that your Faculty Association is committed to doing everything possible to ensure that the Collective Agreement is upheld and that administration is fully aware of their obligations to faculty.

Here are a few key reminders from your Collective Agreement to help you start the year informed:

  • Annual Salary Increases:  All faculty will receive a 3% salary increase annually through 2028.

  • Workload Protections:  Full-time faculty have a maximum of 1,330 annual hours; with a variance allowance of 7%, and cannot be scheduled for more than 9 instructional hours per day unless mutually agreed (Articles 13.2, 13.3.2, and 13.9).

  • Working Day:  shall mean any day on which the College is open to the public except for Saturdays, Sundays or general holidays listed in Article 16.6 “General Holidays” (Article 1.11).

  • Instructional Hours:

    • 540–576 instructional hours for most full-time faculty.

    • 625 instructional hours for Trades faculty.

    • 2-for-1 workload model applies to instructional hours.

    • Probationary Instructor’s workload will be reduced by one (1) course which is equivalent of three (3) instructional hours per semester in the first year of employment (Article 13.3.6).

    • Full-time Term Certain faculty with a two-year or longer contract; will have their workload reduced by one (1) course which is equivalent of three (3) instructional hours per year if enrolled in an ICP course during that year (Article 13.3.7).

    • Unique courses assigned to each Instructor should generally be limited to four (4) per semester.Additional unique classes require mutual agreement between the Administrator and the Faculty Member (Article 13.3.4)

  • Professional Development (PD):  Continuing faculty are eligible for annual PD funds and sabbatical opportunities, while Term Certain and Sessional faculty may access designated PD funding to support their growth (Article 17).

  • Workload Adjustments:  Automatic workload adjustments apply for larger class sizes and discussions with your administrator are needed to address heavy marking loads, ensuring fair distribution of responsibilities (Article 13).

  • Workload Calculator:  Lethbridge Polytechnic and the Faculty Association have developed a joint workload calculator to help faculty better understand their workload obligations and reasonable expectations. If you would like support using the calculator or interpreting your results, please connect with the Faculty Association office.

  • Support for Concerns:  Whether it’s about workload, evaluation, or employment terms, the grievance procedure (Article 8) is available to protect your rights.

LPFA – September General Meeting By-election 

The following positions are now open for election within the Lethbridge Polytechnic Faculty Association (LPFA). These roles are key to supporting the work of the Association and representing the interests of our faculty. A by-election will be held at the end of September to fill these positions, and a formal call for nominations will be released soon.

Available Positions

  • Bylaws Standing Committee – 1 elected position

  • Board of Governors Representative – 1 elected position

  • Executive Council (Constituency 1) – 1 elected position

  • Executive Council Alternate – 1 elected position

  • Occupational Health & Safety Committee – 1 elected position

Faculty members interested in any of these positions are encouraged to submit their nominations to Mike Mayo at mike.mayo@lethpolytech.ca or to present their names during the call from the floor at the September General Meeting. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
